Aquaculture

Kahaluu Red (2)Hapa Farms breeds various species of tilapia for use in aquaculture and aquaponic systems.  All of our fish are antibiotic free and we maintain a strict testing protocol and biosecurity measures to ensure that all of our fish are Fno-free.

Fno

Francisella noatunensis subsp. orientalis (Fno) is a highly infectious bacterium that has caused mass die offs of tilapia populations in Hawaii since it was first detected locally 1994. It has been commonly referenced under several different names, initially called tilapia rickettsia like organism (TRLO) then later referred to as Francisella-like bacteria (FLB), but has recently been more specifically identified as Fno.

Fno is one of the most pathogenic bacteria in fish and there are no known treatments of vaccines.  It has killed many domestic tilapia populations and recent research has linked it to other non-tilapia species, including Chinese catfish and barracuda.  Fno has a high rate of occurrence in wild tilapia populations as well.

Keeping your fish stock Fno-free is important to protect your investment from this often-fatal bacterium and to prevent the spread of Fno to other fish populations and/or species.  Hapa Farms adheres to strict biosecurity measures and has voluntarily initiated a rigorous Fno testing protocol.  Our tilapia fish stock have currently tested Fno-free based on both conventional and real time PCR testing. We are participating in ongoing research with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) on developing a process that will result in an Fno-free certification for tilapia.

Kahaluu Red (01)Kahalu’u Red Tilapia

There are several species of red tilapia that have been bred for their marketability because of their attractive red coloring, including the Florida Red and Jamaican Red.  Hapa Farms breeds the Kahalu’u Red, a hybrid Oreochromis spp., that has a reddish-orange coloring with black spots.

The Kahalu’u Reds are a great fish for beginners in aquaculture or aquaponics as they are hearty, tolerant of low oxygen conditions, and are fast-growing.  They are good eating fish as well.  Research done at the University of Hawaii has shown that a similar hybrid is less susceptible to Fno than the golden tilapia strain.  Our Kahalu’u Red tilapia are antibiotic-free and tested Fno-free.

Kahalu’u Black Tilapia

The Kahalu’u black is a dark colored hybrid Oreochromis spp. Similar to the Kahalu’u Reds, the Kahalu’u blacks are also a great fish for beginners in aquaculture or aquaponics as they are hearty, tolerant of low oxygen conditions, and are fast-growing.  They are good eating fish.  Research done at the University of Hawaii has shown that a similar hybrid is less susceptible to Fno than the golden tilapia strain. Our Kahalu’u Black tilapia are antibiotic-free and tested Fno-free.

Blue Tilapia (01)Blue Tilapia

Originally introduced to the United States in Florida in 1961, the blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) are one of the most widely cultured fish in the world.  They are cold-water tolerant.  Research done at the University of Hawaii has shown that this species is less susceptible to Fno than the golden tilapia strain. Hapa Farms’ blue tilapia are antibiotic-free and tested Fno-free.

This species is recommended for the more advanced aquaculturists as they are less tolerant to non-ideal conditions.  They also grow and breed less rapidly.
